At that stage, it becomes an end of life vehicle (ELV), and disposing of it correctly is not just good practice, it is a legal requirement.
What is an end of life vehicle?
An end of life vehicle is any motor vehicle that its owner has decided to discard. Under UK law, and the End of Life Vehicles Regulations 2003 (implementing the EU ELV Directive), these vehicles must be disposed of through an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF). You cannot legally abandon a vehicle, and unofficial disposal can result in fines.
Why proper disposal matters
- Modern vehicles contain hazardous materials including engine oil, brake fluid, coolant, battery acid, and airbag propellants. Improper disposal of these fluids poses a significant environmental risk.
- The metals, glass, rubber, and plastics in a vehicle are valuable recyclable materials. Responsible scrapping ensures these are recovered and reused.
- You have a legal obligation to ensure your vehicle is disposed of correctly. If the vehicle is abandoned or sold to an unlicensed operator, you may retain legal liability.
The Certificate of Destruction
When your vehicle is processed by an Authorised Treatment Facility, the ATF issues a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This is sent electronically to the DVLA and confirms that the vehicle has been permanently removed from UK roads. You should receive a copy for your own records.
From the moment the CoD is issued, you are no longer the registered keeper and have no further liability for the vehicle, including road tax, insurance, or parking fines.
